Before we can begin to restore a home to its original condition, SERVPRO technicians must determine the level of the damage. Minor Damage – This level includes smoke and soot residues. At this category, the damage is not structure-wide but limited to two or three rooms usually. The residues are light to moderate so that we can restrict our restoration efforts dry and wet cleaning (primarily by hand) of the affected property and structure (walls and ceilings). The need to repaint is limited, and only minor items such as books and small lamps may require replacement.

Medium Damage – In this category, the residues affect more of the home, possibly the entire structure. The thickness is more pronounced which means that dry cleaning may no longer be an option. It is still possible to clean all or most of the affected property at home. The amount of assets which need replacing is higher and may now include large pieces like chairs and mattresses. Smoke odors are stronger and may require multiple methods of cleaning to remove them. This category is also where technicians find the first instances of heat damage. Wood floors and kitchen cabinets need refinishing as will other items.

Major Damage – This is the category of actual fire (flame) damage. At this level, structural supports must be replaced to prevent collapse and further damage. The entire structure must be cleaned and deodorized. The amount of property requiring replacement is much higher, and everything inside can be written off as a total loss by most insurance companies.
